Compress PDF

Shrink a PDF by re-encoding its pages. Choose a preset or enter any target size you need.

Note:- Pages are re-drawn as images, so text becomes non-selectable. This gives the biggest size reduction, especially for scanned PDFs.

Reduce a PDF to a smaller size in your browser

PDF files often become large because each page contains a high-resolution image or scan. This tool redraws the pages at a lower resolution and re-encodes them, which can produce a much smaller document for email, upload portals and storage. You can use a ready-made quality preset or set an exact target size in KB or MB. Advanced controls let you change the resolution, image quality and colour mode. The whole process runs on your device, so confidential documents are not uploaded to a third-party server.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Select a PDF or drag it into the drop zone.
  2. Choose a preset: Low for the smallest file, Medium for a balance, High for better text, or Custom to control the settings yourself.
  3. If a portal gives you a maximum size, enter the target value and choose KB or MB.
  4. Adjust resolution and image quality when using Custom. A lower DPI makes a smaller file but can soften small text.
  5. Click Compress PDF, wait for the progress bar, then download the finished PDF.

When this tool is useful

  • Email attachments: bring a scanned document under a mailbox's attachment limit.
  • Government and job portals: meet a maximum upload size without buying desktop software.
  • Scanned paperwork: reduce photo-heavy PDFs created by a phone scanning app.
  • Storage: archive old invoices, notes and reports in a smaller format.

Important quality note

This compressor works by re-drawing each page as an image. That gives a large reduction on scanned documents, but it also means text becomes non-selectable and cannot be searched or copied in the output. If you need selectable text, keep a copy of the original and use the compressed file only for uploading or sharing. Start with the Medium preset, check that names, numbers and small print are still readable, and then try a smaller target if the result is acceptable. For a text-only document, converting to grayscale can reduce size further, but always verify the final pages.

Privacy and file handling

The PDF is opened, rendered and rebuilt locally. ImageTool24 does not receive the document, and there is no account or email requirement. Large files can take longer because each page must be rendered by your browser, so keep the tab open until the progress completes.

Frequently asked questions

Will the compressed PDF keep selectable text?

No. Pages are converted to images, so text becomes part of the picture. Keep the original if you need to copy, search or edit the text later.

Can I set an exact target size?

You can enter a target in KB or MB. The tool aims for that size, but the final result may vary slightly depending on page count and image content.

Is it better for scanned or digital PDFs?

It is most effective on scanned image-heavy PDFs. A digital PDF that is mostly text may shrink less because the pages are being re-encoded as pictures.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression runs in your browser and the file stays on your device.
