Best results come from photos with a clear, fairly plain background.

Blur the background of a photo online

A blurred background makes the subject stand out and gives a photo a softer, more professional look. This tool detects the background near the edges of the image, applies a blur and lets you control both the detection sensitivity and the blur strength. It is useful for portraits, product shots, profile pictures and any image where the background is distracting but you do not want to replace it completely. The effect is created in your browser, so the original photo stays private.

How to blur an image background

  1. Select a photo or drag it into the drop zone.
  2. Adjust the background sensitivity until the subject is protected and the surrounding area is selected.
  3. Increase the blur strength to soften the background. A moderate value often looks more natural than the maximum.
  4. Choose JPG or PNG for the output.
  5. Click Download Image and check the edges around hair, shoulders and objects.

Best uses for a blurred background

  • Portraits: separate a person from a busy street, room or garden.
  • Product photos: keep attention on the item rather than the surface behind it.
  • Profile pictures: create a softer backdrop for a professional or social avatar.
  • Privacy: make background details less recognisable before sharing a photo.

Getting a natural-looking result

This tool works by detecting the background colour at the image edges, so it performs best when the subject is clearly separated from a fairly plain background. Photos with a similar colour in the subject and background may need a lower or higher sensitivity setting and a careful check around the edges. Blurring does not fully hide a sensitive document or face; if privacy is the goal, remove or cover the information completely. For a transparent cut-out instead of a blur, use Remove Background. For a new solid colour behind a passport-style photo, try Passport Size Photo.

Privacy and local editing

The photo is processed on your device. ImageTool24 does not upload it or keep a copy. The blurred result is downloaded directly from your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I blur only the background and keep the face sharp?

Yes, when the subject is reasonably separate from the background. Adjust the sensitivity and inspect the result around hair and shoulders.

Does it work on complex backgrounds?

Complex scenes with similar colours or many overlapping objects can be difficult for edge-based detection. A dedicated AI background tool may be better for those photos.

Which format should I download?

JPG is smaller for ordinary photos. Use PNG if you need a lossless copy or plan to edit the result again.

Is the original photo changed?

No. The tool creates a new downloaded image; the file on your device is not modified.
